About Jacquie
and the
Little Red
Art Shed
I have lived in small tourist towns of Northern Michigan my entire life - minus a 5 year excursion to the Netherlands. Both locales have and continue to offer the stories, beauty and interesting inner dialogues which need to come out on to my canvases. But living on a “farmette” raising chickens (Red Toes, Hobbler, Karen & Karen) has hatched another theme - absurdity. Maybe it’s my age. Maybe it’s the chickens. But so many things are just ridiculous and quite funny.
Having been a graphic designer for over 16 years, order and composition are welded into my brain while beauty and humor are my brain’s delight. Currently I work mainly in oil paints. I do love, love, love a good old pencil on paper - the smell, the sound, it’s intoxicating.
Mostly self-taught with a peppering of classes, I have been slowly growing in skill and successfully showing my paintings in local venues since 1998. I try to stay away from brooding thoughts in case they stick, preferring my mental art studio to remain clear and bright so that what comes off my brush reflects that. Perhaps naive, my subject matter bounces from the comical to natural beauty and back. The area I live in every day of my life provides endless lighting variations, endless sky and land/waterscape scenarios and much wonderful humanity. Have you ever seen a tourist or an entitled local? They are the best!
What’s with The Little Red Art Shed you ask? It’s the most romantic gift I’ve received in my life. When moving from town out to the 700 square foot cabin, my husband bought, insulated, and finished off the inside of a little shed - complete with electricity and heat - all for my art pursuits!
I’ve also gotten some support from The Other Side when my recently-passed mother visited me in a dream. She told me to only add beauty to this world. “I’m trying, mom.”
